As we are sniffling, snorting and coughing due to seasonal allergies, our pets can be suffering also.
The most common allergy symptom for dogs is itchy skin. This is called Atopic Dermatitis. Cats may have respiratory symptoms, lip ulcers, digestive problems, or they may also have skin symptoms which are often displayed with scabs on the head or all over the body. This symptom is called Milliary Dermatitis. Fleas are certainly the most common reason for these skin symptoms, but seasonal allergies are possible as well.
Birdneck Animal Hospital can recommend medication, baths and fatty acid supplements to help control the symptoms. Once other causes like food allergies, mites and fungal infections have been ruled out, severe cases may be referred to a Veterinary Dermatologist for skin testing and allergy shots.
