Do you have an itchy pet?
Is your pet scratching?
Is there a rash on your pet?
Pets can have skin problems due to many reasons including genetic predisposition, allergies, hormone abnormalities, liver disease, trauma, bacterial infections, autoimmune disease, fungal infections (yeast or ringworm) and parasites such as fleas, mites and lice.
Some of the fungal infections and parasites are potentially infectious to other pets and sometimes to people. Tests such as a fungal culture and a skin scrape are likely to be recommended when these problems are suspected. Tests that may be recommended for other types of skin problems in pets include bloodwork, biopsies, cytologies, and bacterial cultures.
It's best to check with your veterinarian before self treating any skin issues at home. An exam, and the proper testing when indicated, will help ensure the problem gets the proper treatment and your pets can be comfortable once again!
